The Legend of Mulan

When the Disney Princess Mulan movie was released in 1998, moviegoers were introduced to a whole new type of Disney heroine. Mulan is not graceful, demure and romantic. She is a clumsy but brave girl who grows in self reliance as she succeeds in a man’s world. The film is based on an ancient Chinese tale called “The Legend of Hua Mulan” that may be historical or allegorical. The story tells the exploits of a girl warrior around the 5th or 6th century.

Fa Hua Mulan

Hua Mulan is the only child of the Fa family. Her family sends her to a matchmaker for a husband but she fails miserably. The Emperor’s representative announces that Huns have invaded. He drafts a man from each family to rebuild the Imperial Army. Mulan’s father, Fa Zhou, is determined to go despite his age and an old war wound. Mulan, equally determined to spare him, cuts her hair, takes his armor and his horse Khan, and sets off to war, masquerading as her father’s imaginary son Fa Ping. She prays that her ancestors will help her but they send only a small dragon, Mushu, as her guardian. At first, he is on the mission to restore his own position, but after he sees her bravery, he decides to help rather than hinder her quest.

In the army camp, General Li promotes his son Li Shang to captain, placing him in charge of training the troops. Due to her poor performance, Li Shang orders Fa Ping to go home. Determined not to fail, Mulan manages to impress him, to inspire the troops, and to make friends with Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po.

As Hun soldiers gather in the mountains, Mulan uses a cannon to cause an avalanche that covers the Huns. She is wounded as she saves Shang. When she is treated, she is discovered to be a young woman and is banished. Seeing the recovered Huns heading to the city, she follows them. The Huns capture the Emperor but Hua Mulan is able to rescue him, using her friends dressed as concubines. She lures Shan Yu, the Hun leader, to his death, winning victory for China.

Mulan is made Princess of China and is given a royal crest and Shan Yu’s sword. Back at home, when she presents these prizes to her father, he calls her his greatest gift and honor. Shang follows her home and Mushu is restored as a guardian dragon. Disney Princess Mulan is a wonderful movie for young girls to watch and enjoy.

Mulan Movie Party Ideas

All of the Disney Princesses make wonderful party themes for young girls, after all, every little girl dreams of becoming a princess. Princess Mulan is a little different than most of the Disney Princesses, as you read above. You can get some fun party ideas to use although there are no Mulan party supplies, per se. But you can still plan a movie watching party or let the girls watch the Mulan movie at a girls sleep over party.

Find some fun party food ideas that fit in with Disney Princess Mulan. Order Chinese, use chop sticks, have some fun with fortune cookies! Let the girls apply some temporary tattoos, decorate a scrapbook page with Mulan pictures, clip art and other embellishments and make sure to take a picture of each girl to put into her scrapbook page. Have each girl hold the Mulan movie box up for a photo!

Learn how to make a Mulan costume. There are several different styles you have to choose from. I'll bet the girls would love to play a dress up game at your birthday or sleep over party. Or your daughter probably likes to play dress up all the time!

Mulan party favors can let you get a little bit creative. Get some extra Chinese take out containers to use as a party favor box. Fill it with chop stick pencils, Chinese temporary tattoos and some Disney Princess stickers. You can even roll up some free, printable Mulan coloring pages to use as a party favor. Add a small box of crayons and you've got a cheap party favor the kids will love.

You can bake some Mulan cakes. Get an edible cake image on Ebay and just put it right on top of your baked and frosted homemade cake. Or use Mulan cupcake picks to put on your homemade cupcakes. There are edible images in cupcake sizes too.
